The Become a Legend Mode is a play on the Master League and is a new feature to PES 2009, but thrown into a different perspective, your perspective, the game starts off as you (your player) as a 17 year old rookie at the fictional club FC Babilayna playing against Athletic Club Salsabie, and throughout your career you make choices as a real footballer would. You then have the choice to retire at the age of 27 or be forced to at the age of 35. Your player's age increases by one year at the end of each season.

The Become a Legend mode starts first by creating your player, the facial features can be done with either the Eyetoy or you can build your face from scratch. With the Eyetoy or any other compatible camera you scan your face onto a player's body. You then play your first game where you are told there are scouts watching your match, at the end of the match you are given three contract proposals by average sides in your league and you must choose one. You then have to make it to that team's bench in order to progress, this is done by impressing your coach in training matches against the first team. You can then earn transfers from bigger clubs in different leagues and even get called up for your national team (depending if the nationality of your player has a playable nation in the game).

Throughout the season you also get to hone your skills with six in particular; kicking, dribbling, balance, power, speed and stamina. It is very similar to FIFA's Be a Pro mode even though PES has had fixed cursor mode before FIFA introduced it. Another major difference is that FIFA's mode is only 4 years whilst Pro Evo's mode is from years 17-35.

Also it is known by most PES fans that Become a Legend came before Be a Pro mode as it was in the Japanese Winning Eleven beforehand under a different name and also the Fixed Player Mode was in previous games.
