[edit] Players
During Jose Mourinho's reign as manager, Chelsea were considered one of the best teams in the game with Petr Cech in goal, John Terry and Ricardo Carvalho as a centre-back pairing, Paulo Ferreira and Ashley Cole as full-backs, Frank Lampard, Michael Essien and John Obi Mikel in a central-midfield three, and Florent Malouda, Arjen Robben and Didier Drogba in a front-three.
However after the portuguese coach left the club, his successors Avram Grant, Luiz Felipe Scolari, Guus Hiddink and Carlo Ancelotti all used a 4-4-2 "diamond" formation with full-backs Jose Bosingwa and Ashley Cole providing the width for the four central midfielders Frank Lampard, Michael Essien, John Obi Mikel and Michael Ballack.
It was only after new portuguese coach Andre Villas-Boas was appointed that Chelsea reverted back to a ball-playing 4-3-3 formation with John Terry and new signing David Luiz forming a defensive pairing, Branislav Ivanovic and Ashley Cole as full-backs, John Obi Mikel, Frank Lampard and new signing Raul Meireles in a midfield three, Daniel Sturridge and new signing Juan Mata as wingers, and new club record signing Fernando Torres as the main striker. Andre Villas-Boas was sacked after a poor run of results in the league and Roberto Di Matteo was appointed as Chelsea boss midway through the 2011/2012 season, Chelsea went on to win the UEFA Champions League by playing in a new counter-attacking style.
Before the start of the 2012/2013 season, Chelsea invested heavily on the likes of Eden Hazard, Oscar, Marko Marin, Victor Moses and Cesar Azpilicueta. The team also adopted a new 4-5-1 ball-playing formation with John Terry and Gary Cahill as the centre-back pairing, Branislav Ivanovic and Ashley Cole as full-backs, John Obi Mikel and Frank Lampard as holding midfielders, Juan Mata and Eden Hazard on both flanks and Oscar playing behind Fernando Torres.
