Many PES gamers like to use attacking formations when controlling Italy because the strong defence has the ability to withstand counter attacks, despite the team often choosing to deploy a 4-5-1 formation in real life. Gianluigi Buffon is arguably the best goalkeeper on the game and with the likes of Fabio Cannavaro in front of him as well as Gennaro Gattuso or Daniele De Rossi in the holding midfield role, Italy are a difficult team to break down. The majority of the play runs through deep lying playmaker Andrea Pirlo, while striker Luca Toni has the strength and power to hold the ball up so attacking full backs Fabio Grosso and Gianluca Zambrotta as well as attacking midfielder Mauro Camoranesi are given the chance get forward and support attacks.
