Overview

The Neoseeker Super League was a Neoseeker forum competition devised by sweenEy. It was a fantasy offline competition where members who were involved took turns to select any club team featured on PES2008 to compete in various league and cup competitions. Matches were played between two *computer controlled teams and the results were recorded and then posted in the appropriate thread on the Winning Eleven: Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 forum. The Super League lasted for a total of two seasons.

Managers had the chance to chop and change their teams' line up and formations as well as being able to decide upon each and every detail of their chosen side. There were also organized transfer windows where managers had the opportunity to buy, sell, trade and loan players to and from other teams involved in the competition.

There had been a similar competition the year before on the PES6 forum on Neoseeker, the Neoseeker Draft League. It proved a huge success with an eventual 40 members taking part, with 4 seasons (over 800 matches) being played.

Super League Team

The Super League team was comprised of each member who contributed towards the success of the Super League. There were five members in all:

  • sweenEy - sweenEy was the main organizer of the Super League. His responsibilities included creating and mainting the league tables, top goalscorers and squads and playing some of the matches at the start of the first season.
  • charlie_22 - charlie_22 was the assistant to sweenEy throughout the competition. His responsibilities were to make sure the Super League option file was fully up to date and to play the vast majority of matches in the competition. charlie_22 began by playing every other round of League B games but eventually took over playing every match for both League A and League B. He also played every match during Season 2 of the competition.
  • ColdBurn - ColdBurn was part of the Super League team for a short spell at the start of Season 1. His responsibility was to play every other round of League A matches.
  • swatchss - swatchss was also only part of the team for a short while. His responsibility was to play every other round of League B matches.
  • skares - skares' role in the Super League team was to help unlock the classic players on the Super League option file so that they were available for transfer.

Season 2

Cup Format

Unlike the opening season of the Super League, the second season took the form of a cup competition. 37 teams were maintained in the competition and organizer sweenEy decided to introduce a preliminary qualifying phase to shorten down the numbers for the actual group phase. So the teams who finished in the bottom four of their respective leagues in the first season (Fiorentina, Atletico Madrid, Sevilla, Newcastle United, Sporting CP, Udinese, Feyenoord and Fenerbahce) were entered into a single group. In this group they played each other only once and at the end of these fixtures the 3 highest placed teams continued into the latter stages of the competition.

Group Stages/Knockout Rounds

The next round of the competition would consist of 8 seperate groups consisting of 4 teams that remained in the competition. Teams were seeded for the group draw depending on their final league position in the first season. In each group, the four teams played each other twice and once these games were complete, the two highest ranked teams in each group qualified for the knockout stages which was known as the Super League Championship. The two lowest ranked teams in each group were entered into a lesser competition which was known as the Super League Trophy. A Friendly Group was also created for the remaining 5 teams that did not qualify for the group stages. All of these teams qualified for the Super League Trophy.

An unseeded draw involving each of the qualifiers then took place to determine who played who in the first knockout round of both competitions (Super League Championship and Super League Trophy). Each of the ties consisted of two legs, with the winner on aggregate progressing to the next round of the knockout phase. In both competitions, the knockout phase continued until 2 teams were left to battle out one final game played over one leg. The winners of both would then be crowned champions.

Drawing the Groups

Before the draw for the group stages begun, Super League teams were placed in their respective seeding group based on their performance in the first season. They were as followed:

First Seeds

  • Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Chelsea, Inter, Liverpool, Manchester United, Rangers, Tottenham

Second Seeds

  • Arsenal, Juventus, Lyon, Milan, PSV, Real Zaragoza, Roma, Villarreal
