Xbox Live allows online play for PES players that own an Xbox 360. Players can play exhibition matches online as well as Legends mode. Ranked matches and unranked matches are available with ranked matches contributing to a rating system ranked by division.

The online mode in PES has received mixed opinions some some players fell it is unplayable due to lag whereas other find the lag very minor. Konami has released various patches to try and fix online problems.

Players can also unlock the PES 2009 Online achievements on Xbox Live.
